Mumbai: Rajkummar Rao is excited as his new film Newton has been announced as India's official entry for the Oscars. The actor says that he will call superstar Aamir Khan for the advice on its promotion.
Last Saturday, all hell broke lose in Bollywood with the news of India’s entry to the Oscars —Amit V. Masurkar’s Newton — being allegedly inspired from a 2001 Iranian film — Babak Payami’s Secret Ballot. Since then, Bollywood film buffs have been busy seeing both the movies and passing judgements in favour of, or against Newton.
One little bit of information that caught our eye was that one of the producers of Secret Ballot happens to be none other than the much respected Marco Mueller, one of the mentors at the Work In Progress (WIP) Lab of National Film Development Corporation’s Film Bazaar in Goa.

Mr. Mueller has been the director of film festivals of Pesaro, Rotterdam, Locarno, Venice and Rome. He also initiated the Hubert Bals Film Fund and the Cinemart Project Workshop in The Netherlands, the Montecinemaverità Film Fund in Switzerland, and the South/East Cinema Fund in Italy. He has programmed film festivals in China since 2015 and is currently the Artistic Director of the first ever edition of the Pingyao International Film Festival (PYIFF) for which he has teamed up with the Chinese auteur Jia Zhangke.
Coincidentally, India's Oscar connect with Mr. Mueller has a history to it. He has produced and co-produced 14 features including Danis Tanovic’s No Man’s Land that beat Ashutosh Gowariker’s Lagaan in the Oscar race in 2002. “[I] Have never met with Amit [V. Masurkar]. And of course I never did read any treatment or script of Newton. (The project was not part of the Work In Progress lab). [I] Have also not seen the film. But several filmmaker friends liked it a lot, so am sure Amit is a very decent director. And I wish the film the best of success in its Academy Awards career,” Mr. Mueller said.

When asked about his team strategy to promote Newton  at the Oscars, Rajkummar said: "It's just got announced and its too soon to decide but our team is going to meet and we will plan something about it because there has to be strategy. We will be going to America to promote the film." He was present at the GQ Men of the Year Award on Friday night. When reporters asked Rajkummar whether he is going to get some guidance from Aamir Khan about film promotion at the Oscars, he said, "Off course, I will definitely call him and meet him because 'Lagaan' was there at the Oscars and we are really proud of the film. so I am sure Aamir sir will help us a lot." Rajkummar attended the event along with girlfriend Patralekha who seems excited about the film too "I am very thrilled. Newton is a film that should get in top five films at the Oscars because it's really good and relevant and shows different side of India," she said".
Newton revolves around Newton Kumar, a rookie government clerk who is sent on election duty to a naxal-controlled town in the conflict-ridden jungles of Chhattisgarh, India. It has been directed by Amit V Masurkar.
